FOR ART'S SAKE

If politicians could have their way,
funding for arts would be taken away
and that which makes our lives more worthwhile
would no longer be there to bring us a smile.
Paintings and music would go out of style.

Only commercially viable causes
would find a place in congressional clauses,
that deal with which matters they ought to assist
and, art would be stricken from any such list.
Art, for art's sake, might cease to exist.

Because politicians care only about
tangible things we could all live without,
valuable things that can be bought or sold
for a few ounces of silver or gold.
Art doesn't fit well into that mold.

Art is derived of emotion and passion,
it isn't dictated by finance or fashion,
it isn't conceived as a means to an end,
art has a message it wants to send
and some enjoyment it wishes to lend.

Without it how dreary our world would become,
without a horn or a bell or a drum,
without a symphony with a bassoon,
The best things in life would be gone all too soon.

True satisfaction with this life on earth
is not in acquiring great wealth or great worth
but, rather in knowing such mere simple pleasure,
as to be found in our artistic treasure.
What this is worth, no scale can measure.
